Content Management Systems (CMS)

It sometimes feels as if there are thousands of Content Management Systems, and thousands of web design studios offering tailor-made solutions.

What exactly does a CMS do? The website basically gets arranged into a template system, and is then re-assembled in the browser as the finished webpage. This means that a site can be made of many different components, and most of the nuts and bolts will remain hidden from the person adding the content.

Most CMS also make use of a database to store the site content. this has many advantaes, inlcuding making the site easier both to archive and to backup.

Here are some of the best CMS!

Nucleus CMS

This is a mean and lean CMS, initially intended for blogging. However, it is capable of a great deal more, and is easily customizable. It also produces valid XHTML and supports stylesheets!

Doodleweb's very own Conrad's Blog uses Nucleus.

Wordpress

As it says on the website, Wordpress is definitely 'state of the art' blogging software.

However, whilst there are some clever folks out there who have adapted it to extend its capabilities as a CMS, the emphasis remains on blogging.
